As a professional dog trainer, I have worked with a wide variety of Labradoodles. Not all doodles are created equally and it's important to know the differences in types of Labradoodles:

Understanding the Generations and coat Types
Not all Labradoodles are created equal. While the name may be the same, the differences between generations can have a significant impact on coat type, temperament, and overall predictability. At Luxe Labradoodles, we believe in educating our families about these differences so you can make the most informed choice for your future companion. Here's a breakdown of the most common Labradoodle types:
𧬠F1 Labradoodle (First Generation)
What it is: A 50/50 cross between a purebred Labrador Retriever and a Standard Poodle.
Coat Type: May shed, often has a wiry or straight coat.
Shedding: Moderate to heavy; not ideal for allergy-sensitive households.
Temperament: Energetic and friendly, but coat and size can vary widely.
π F1B Labradoodle (Backcross)
What it is: An F1 Labradoodle bred back to a Poodle (75% Poodle, 25% Lab).
Coat Type: More consistent, often wavy or curly.
Shedding: Typically low-shedding or non-shedding; better for allergy-prone families.
Purpose: Bred to improve coat texture and reduce shedding seen in F1s.
𧬠F2 Labradoodle (Second Generation)
What it is: A cross between two F1 Labradoodles.
Coat Type: Extremely varied; can range from wiry to soft, curly, or straight.
Shedding: Still common; not reliably allergy-friendly.
Note: This generation is the least predictable in coat, temperament, and appearance.
π Multigenerational Labradoodles (Multi-gen)
What it is: A Labradoodle bred for 3 or more generations.
Coat Type: Consistently non-shedding and allergy-friendly.
Temperament: Bred for stability, intelligence, and a loving, even temperament.
Best for: Families seeking consistency in size, coat, and personality.
Why it matters: Consistency in coat type and temperament improves drastically at the multigenerational level, making them the ideal choice for families with allergies, children, or therapy needs.
What Is an Australian Labradoodle?
There are now so many types of Doodles out there β from Goldendoodles to Bernedoodles and everything in between β but we believe the Australian Labradoodle stands out as the best choice for families seeking a dog with exceptional health, consistent temperament, and a beautiful, allergy-friendly coat.
The Multigenerational Australian Labradoodle is a purposefully bred dog that originated in Australia. Unlike early-generation Labradoodles, the Australian Labradoodle is not simply a Poodle and Labrador mix β it is a careful cross of Poodle, Labrador Retriever, and select Spaniel breeds (such as the English or American Cocker Spaniel).
Originally developed by Wally Conron for GDAV Guide Dog Services in Australia to create an allergy-friendly service dog, this foundation line was later enhanced by breeders at Tegan Park and Rutland Manor. These breeders introduced select breeds to improve health, structure, coat type, and temperament.
These infusions resulted in:
A distinct, uniform appearance
Non-shedding coats ideal for allergy sufferers
Intelligent, highly trainable, loving companions
